Our Academic Programme

Academic success is strongly linked to the positive outcomes we value at St. Stephen’s College. Students who do well in school are better equipped to transition into adulthood and to achieve professional and economic success.

In observance of the Ministry of Education’s requirements, St. Stephen’s College follows the Secondary Education Modernisation Programme (SEMP) Curriculum from forms one to three and students are prepared for the National Certificate of Secondary Education (NCSE)examinations at the end of Form 3.

NCSE is the system of assessment and certification for secondary education in the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. Students are assessed using regular continuous assessments. Marks that students are awarded for coursework, other assessments and end-of term or end-of-year assessments in each of Forms 1, 2, and 3 are combined with the marks from the national examination to obtain the final marks for certification.

The Ministry of Education awards certificates to all students who attain a combined final mark of at least 60% for each of the eight core subjects. Students are awarded certification based on successful completion of examinations on the national curriculum in the following subjects:

Agricultural Science, Language Arts, Mathematics, Physical Education, Science, Social Studies, Spanish, Technology Education and Visual and Performing Arts

At the end of form 3, students select a minimum of eight subjects which must include a science subject for the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examinations. For fourth and fifth forms, we follow the CSECsyllabus in preparation for examinations in various subjects, including a compulsory core of English Language, English Literature, Mathematics and a science subject.

St. Stephen’s College offers instruction in a broad range of subjects to our students.

Limitations of space and staffing restrict our intake of students into the Sixth Form (Lower VI and Upper VI) to two classes totalling approximately 60-70 students. As a result, entry is highly competitive, and is based in part on academic qualifications (students’ CSEC results and teachers’ assessments of their intellectual promise), attendance records, overall conduct, and involvement in school activities.
Our Sixth Form students follow an intense and rigorous syllabus in preparation for the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examinations (CAPE).
