Celebrating Multilingualism

Language Day is an initiative of the Modern Foreign Languages department that takes place in the second term of every school year.

The purpose of this annual event is to showcase and celebrate the variety, complexity, and uniqueness of cultures from all over the world and to promote tolerance, cultural sensitivity, and acceptance of individual differences.

The students at St. Stephen’s College research several aspects of a Francophone and Hispanophone country. In researching these cultures, our students recognize and develop an appreciation not only for the geographical and cultural characteristics of other countries, but also for the diversity and similarities that we all share.

Students and teachers go above and beyond to transform the amphitheater and backstage area into showcases celebrating the countries they have been studying in the weeks leading up to the celebration. Our morning assembly is conducted in French and Spanish and there are quizzes, tongue twisters and other activities based on the two countries under study.

Those present at Language Day have the chance to taste traditional food, enjoy presentations, explore artifacts and students’ research, and witness live presentations of the traditional dress representative of each country.
